Éire Óg win Mary Ann McGlynn Tournament

On the 28th of May 2022 Éire Óg hosted its annual Mary Ann McGlynn 7’s Tournament. Teams from St Albans, Luton, Watford and Brighton/Crawley traveled from across the Glo-Herts County to take part.

The tournament started with a round-robin group competition for the five teams. On Pitch 1, Claddagh Gaels of Luton took the first points from a resolute St Colmcilles St Albans side.

On Pitch 2, Éire Óg took the lead over a determined Glen Rovers Watford team to see the competition off to a flying start. In the following group games, Éire Óg secured wins against Claddagh Gaels, and Brighton Crawley Gaels, with Brighton Crawley Gaels taking the lead over St Colmcilles and Claddagh Gaels.

In the final stages of the group games, Éire Óg secured it’s fourth win against St Colmcilles and a tense Glen Rovers, Brighton Crawley Gaels game resulted in a draw.

As fourth and fifth place were tied on points, an additional game was proposed rather than reverting to score difference. St Colmcilles took the lead and secured a place in the Shield final against Claddagh Gaels, with Éire Óg and Brighton Crawley Gaels reaching the final.

A tough competition ensued on pitch 1 in the Shield Final with St Colmcilles emerging victorious. Éire Óg and Brighton Crawley Gaels took center stage for the cup final on Pitch 2 with Éire Óg putting some impressive scores on the board in the first half. Brighton Crawley Gaels stepped up defense for the second half, not allowing for any more scores from the home side. It was a relief for the Éire Óg team when the final whistle blew with Brigitte McGlynn holding the ball.

The Mary Ann McGlynn cup was presented to Éire Óg captain Lisa Kehoe by Piers McGlynn.

Many thanks to referees Tommy Griffin, John Reape, Eamon Devlin and Frank Dillion. Also everyone involved in planning the day, setting up pitches, umpiring and of course the teams who traveled to attend.
